The Varsity boys defeated Orange for the second time this season, winning 76-63. Sam Utz led the Mountaineers with 18 points with 14 of them coming in the first quarter, including 3 3-pointers….and all I got of that was one layup. I was always in the wrong place. Oh well….
The Varsity girls lost to Orange 42-28. They had a 15-12 lead going into the second half, but couldn’t hang onto it as Orange came out strong in the second half. Rachel Strahan led with 9 points, followed by Caitlyn and Ariel with 8 each.

It started with the varsity girls taking on the Lady Dragons of William Monroe. After being down 10-4 at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Mountaineers rallied to take the lead at half time with a score of 20-19. They couldn’t hold on though, as William Monroe came back to win the game 48-28.
The girl’s game was followed by a ceremony honoring the 1977 Group A Boy’s State Championship team. This is the first, and only, boy’s basketball team to win a State Championship in Madison. Each team member was named and lined up at center court. Then Cara McCurry and David Falk (both with fathers on the team) unvieled a 4’x8′ team photo that will hang in Wetsel gym. (John Stubblefield of Stubblefield Photo in Charlottesville did the photo by scanning an 8×10 print and did a super job of making the enlargement!)
And all of that was followed by the boy’s varsity game with William Monroe. Just like the last game at Orange, Madison never trailed during this game and came away with a 69-59 win. High scorer for the Mountaineers was Matt Garr with 17, followed by David Falk with 14. Jerel Carter and Logan Terrell were also in double figures with 13 each.
