I’m adding this one a bit late, there just wasn’t any time to add pictures on Friday.
We stripped shingles from the other side of the roof we were working on in the morning. We had that side stripped in 1.5 hours! It took us a whole day to do the first side. But this side didn’t have a chimney, and we had a LOT more confidence on the roof after a week of being up there. We spent the rest of the day fixing broken or rotted sheeting boards, tarping the roof, and cleaning up. We ate our lunch a bit early and took a little time to go down the street to play with the neighborhood kids that we had met the day before.
After the workday, all the groups and their homeowners met in a park near SOS and had a picnic. After the picnic was our final chapel service, and then we started making scrapbooks for our homeowners. We were asked to bring a disposable camera with us and take pictures during the week. We then put these pictures in a scrapbook. Each group that works on the house will add their pictures to the scrapbook.
(P.S. To those in my group, I have cards from Parker that I forgot to give you all. I was supposed to give them to you on the ride home, but forgot all about it. SORRY! I will get them to you. I’ll also be adding photos from this week to Facebook as I have time, and I’ll also get you a CD of the photos.)
I also have some photos from Tom Will’s group taken by Michael that I’ll be adding to some of the pages here soon.
This was how the day started, and then it got even better 🙂
After lunch today we went for a walk through the Binghampton neighborhood. There are some really nice houses in the neighborhood, some abandoned ones, and some that need some help. As we were walking, we saw some kids up ahead who were just waving and jumping up and down when they saw us. Well, I’m pretty sure the girls could have stayed there and played with them all day!! I’m sure the girls will go back to visit them again tomorrow! We got the shingles on one side of the roof today, and we’ll start stripping the shingles on the other side tomorrow. Michael has sent some pics from their group, so I’ll get some of the other pages updated with them as soon as I have time. Here are some from our job site today:
…and a few pics from Tom Will’s group, taken by Michael Parker:
Today was ‘half day Wednesday’, which means we had the afternoon off to do whatever we wanted. That didn’t leave a lot of time to work this morning, but we were able to get a few rows of shingles on our roof. After that we just headed west into downtown Memphis, and wandered around down there. Found a mall near the Peabody Hotel and ate dinner there at a restaurant that also had a video arcade. After that we just walked a couple of blocks west to see the Mississippi River. Here are a few pictures:
Another good day!! We got tarpaper on the roof section we are working on, and will start putting shingles on tomorrow (Wednesday). It wasn’t a whole lot for the kids to do up on the roof since we were working close to the edge most of the day, mostly just replacing bad sheeting boards. Jacob and Sarah Margaret did finally get all the tar off around the chimney so it could be re-flashed. We’ll get one of the construction supervisors to come help us with that tomorrow when we start shingling.
This place is extremely well organized. When we need more sheeting boards, or nails, or a different ladder, it’s delivered to us within 30 minute or less….and they have a very well stocked supply room, so they can just pull from there.
Here are a few pictures from our group today, I’ll update the page when Michael sends me his.
Update: (added pics from Michael below the video), but I’m going to have something even better. Each night before Chapel, a couple of the team leaders put on a little skit, and then there is also a contest between 5 or 6 campers. Just a light-hearted way to start off chapel and get everyone in a good mood. The first night they had 5 plates with big piles of whipped cream with a piece of bubble gum in the middle. The contestants had to find the bubble gum using only their mouths, then the first to blow a bubble won. So, anyway, you get the idea. Last night (Tuesday) was a dance contest, but instead of campers they made adult leaders compete. I had seen Shelly (she’s sort of the “MC” of chapel) talking to Bubba earlier. And a couple of our kids whispered to me to be sure I had my camera at chapel. Turns out Bubba had given Tom Will’s name to Shelly 🙂 There’s no way to really put the contest into words other than to say I had tears running down my face by the end because I was laughing so hard!! I videoed the whole thing with my little point and shoot camera, so it’s preserved for history. We’ll get Millie a DVD of it, she’ll need it when she’s older 🙂 Here it is, you’ll probably need to find a fast connection, but it’ll be worth the wait. Tom Will was the last to dance, but watching him anticipate his turn is part of the fun.
Our group started tearing off shingles today. Our group is me, Jacob, Sarah Margaret, Samantha, Cara, Ellen, Bubba, Katy, and Parker, who is our group leader. He’ll be the one in the red shirt. REALLY nice guy, easy to get along with and easy going. And our homeowner, Bertha, is a hoot! She tells us exactly what she thinks, and is making us toe the line. She wants her roof done correctly!!
Michael Parker is taking pictures at the other site. Here’s a few from him..
