Atwell Finishes 2nd at States; Team Finishes 8th
Tyler Atwell (135) finished up his junior season with a State Runner-up finish yesterday at the Group A State Wrestling Championships. Atwell was 3-0 heading into the finals before losing 10-2 in the finals.
Robert Meador (125) finished the weekend in 3rd place, Ethan O’Connell (119) finished in 4th place.
Baxter Helmick (140) and Brent Broyles (160) both finished in 7th place while Brandon Utz (215) finished in 8th.
In all Madison sent 7 wrestlers to the State Tournament placing 6 of them in the top 8 in their weight class. Madison finished the meet in 8th place out of 52 teams.
Another Update (3:15pm on Saturday) Thanks to Mark O’Connell for another wrestling update: “At 119, Ethan won in the consolation quarters over Richard Pugh of Grayson County, by 4-2 decision, and then defeated Buffalo Gap’s Ryan Pyles in the consolation semifinals by the score of 4-0. IN the consolation finals Ethan lost an 8-5 decison to Raphael Gonzalez of Manassas Park. At 125 Robert Meador claimed third place. I’ll will have more foryou later. Atwell wrestles tonight in the championship finals against Sam Frere of Lancaster.”
AND, from the MCHS Athletics website: “Tyler Atwell (135) has advanced to the finals of the Group A State Wrestling Tournament. Ethan O’Connell (119) and Robert Meador (125) are in the semi-finals of the consolation bracket and can finish as high as 3rd place. Baxter Helmick (140), Brent Broyles (160) and Brandon Utz (215) will all be wrestling for 7th place. Danny Oktayuren (152) finished up at 1-2 for the tournament.”
Update (8:45am on Saturday) Thanks to Mark O’Connell for posting the following information as a comment: “Robert Meador and Tyler Atwell both won quarterfinal matches are wrestling in semifinal matches today [Saturday]. Ethan lost in the quarterfinals by fall to his opponent from Northwood but then won last night in the consolations by 6-5 decision over TJ Askew. Helmick, Oktayuren, Broyles and Utz all won consolation matches.”

Ethan O’Connell (119#) wins his first match by pinfall. Ethan was behind the whole match, and was down 21-16 before pinning his opponant with 10 seconds left on the clock in the third round.
Robert Meador (125#) wins his opening round match on points, 12-4.
Baxtor Helmick (140#) lost his match, not sure the score, I somehow completely missed it 🙁
Tyler Atwell (135#) won his opening round match by a score of 2-1.
Danny Oktayuren (152#) lost his opening round match 8-4.
Brent Broyles (160#) lost his match by pin with 7 seconds left in the match.
Brandon Utz (215#) lost his opening round match by pin in the third round.

Awesome shots! I’ll email you more later but here’s what I remember from yesterday. Robert Meador and Tyler Atwell both won quarterfinal matches are wrestling in semifinal matches today. Ethan lost in the quarterfinals by fall to his opponent from Northwood but then won last night in the consolations by 6-5 decision over TJ Askew. Helmick, Oktayuren, Broyles and Utz all won consolation matches. I will get more info for you today.

The team finished in 9th place. Manassas Park won the Group A title. Last year’s champion, Glenvar, was runner up.
Tyler Atwell (135) lost in the finals to Lancaster’s Sam Frere by decision, 10-3. Robert Meador (125) was third, Ethan O’Connell (119) was fourth.
Baxter Helmick (140) and Brent Broyles (160) were seventh and Brandon Utz (215) placed eighth.
